1. Presentation

1.1. The scientific photography and illustration competition is exclusive to those registered for the VIII International Symposium on Entomology in Viçosa.

1.2. The images must correspond to the theme “insects”.

2. Modalities and Categories

PATROCÍNIO (4).png

2.1. Photography: Images captured using cameras from any device (smartphone, digital cameras, semi-professional and professional cameras, etc.). Photographs may fall into three categories: “macro photography”, “scenery photography” and “micro photography”.

2.1.1. In the “macro photography” category, the focus of the image will be on the sharpness of the texture and morphology of the individual(s).

2.1.2. In the “scenery photography” category, the focus will be on the plurality of the environment.

2.1.3. In the “microphotography” category, the focus will be on images taken using microscopy and related techniques, highlighting structures and details that are not visible to the naked eye. Photographs can be taken using optical, electron or stereoscopic microscopy, or other methods that enhance the visualization of microstructures.

2.2. Scientific illustration: images created manually on paper or software, including drawings, paintings, etc. The illustrations can be traditional, digital or free illustrations.

2.2.1. Traditional illustrations will be drawn by hand, with manual techniques, using pencils, pens, brushes, etc.

2.2.2. Digital illustrations will be created using graphic design or digital painting software, such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw. Digitizing tables are allowed. This type of illustration usually follows a more technical and detailed pattern and is aimed at scientific applications, such as articles, books and science communication materials.

2.2.3. Free illustrations include drawings with greater creative freedom, which can be done both manually and digitally. In this category, the focus is on artistic and interpretative expression, allowing insects to be represented in different contexts - such as in natural environments, interacting with other organisms or in imaginative compositions - without the need to follow scientific rigor. This category is open to the creativity of the author.

3. Images

3.1. Photographs must be digital, in JPG format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and 8 megapixels (3264 x 2448 pixels). Digital processing of images is permitted.

3.2. Traditional illustrations must be made on A4 paper, in vertical or horizontal orientation and scanned, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, however, the original artwork must be taken to the event if it is selected. Digital illustrations must be saved in JPG format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and 12 megapixels (4080 x 3072 pixels).

4. Submission

4.1. Each participant can submit 1 (one) image for each category, totaling 3 (three) images for photography and 3 (three) for illustration.

4.2. The file must be sent using the form on the event website, under the “Competition” tab. The name of the file must be “Event registration number + category”, e.g. “1234 Macro”. One form must be filled in for each submission.

5. Pre-selection and exhibition at the event

5.1. Images that do not meet the criteria set out above or that violate copyright will be disqualified.

5.2. The event's Scientific Committee will select 36 (thirty-six) finalist images, 6 (six) from each category (number subject to change), to be printed and displayed on a panel during the event. Selected traditional illustrations will have their original versions exhibited.

6. Evaluation / Voting

The evaluation will be carried out with the selected images in two stages:

6.1. Popular vote on the day of the event: This will be done by paper ballot during the days of the event. Each participant in the event will be able to fill in a slip of paper and place it in the ballot box for each category. Only one vote will be counted in the same category for each registration number.

6.2. Jury voting: The photo contest committee will appoint professionals for technical evaluation.

6.3. The final score for each image will be calculated as the sum of the average score of the juries and the score derived from the popular vote (with the most voted image = 10 points, and the least voted image = 1 point), divided by 2.

7. Awards

The highest score in each category will be awarded a prize. The prizes for each category will be announced on the Symposium's Instagram and during the event.

8. Authorization for image use

Participants in this contest agree to allow the use of their image by the organizers of this edition of the event and by the Graduate Program in Entomology at the Federal University of Viçosa, for dissemination or publication on social networks and collection of decorative material for exhibitions, always with due credit to the author, without the need for prior written authorization.
