SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

I - GENERAL INFORMATION

01. To submit work to the VIII International Symposium on Entomology in Viçosa, participants must be registered for the event. Any of the authors who is registered for the Symposium can submit a paper. If you haven't registered, click here to register;

02. Two papers may be submitted per registration as first author;

03. Papers submitted must be in the Simple Abstract category, following the instructions in item IV;

04. Papers may be submitted in Portuguese, English or Spanish;

05. Papers must be submitted electronically between March 24 and May 23, 2025.

06. The abstract must be attached to the end of the electronic form, according to the template provided by the Scientific Committee, which reserves the right to REJECT abstracts that do not correspond to the Submission Rules;

07. Papers may be presented in oral or poster form. The author must select the type of presentation for their work at the time of submission;

08. It is the participant's responsibility to indicate the thematic area of their work;

09. Papers approved by the Symposium evaluators (peer-reviewed abstracts) will be accepted;

10. Only 12 (twelve) abstracts will be selected for oral presentation. The authors of the selected papers will be notified by e-mail;

12. The best papers will compete for the prizes for best oral presentation and best poster. For more information on the awards, see item VII;

13. The complete list of approved works, venues and presentation times will be published on this website and will be available for individual consultation on the participant's page;

14. All Simple Abstracts accepted by the Scientific Committee will be published in the “Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium of Entomology of Viçosa”, in online form, on the UFV journal platform. At the time of submission, the authors grant the International Symposium of Entomology of Viçosa the copyright to these texts.

II - REJECTION CRITERIA

Abstracts will not be accepted under the following conditions:

01. Research project proposals;

02. Case studies or experience reports not adequately justified or without presentation of results;

03. Paper submitted after the deadline;

04. Paper submitted without the Abstract Submission Form completely filled in;

05. Abstract outside the specified standard;

06. Inadequately formatted abstract;

07. Papers with missing or inadequate methodology and/or analysis;

08. Abstracts with insufficient presentation of results;

09. Papers not related to the proposed thematic areas.

III - THEMATIC AREAS

At the time of submission, authors will have to choose one of the thematic areas below before submitting their abstract:

Acarology;
Biochemistry and cell biology;
Biological control;
Scientific dissemination;
Ecology and biodiversity;
Education, culture and entomology;
Entrepreneurship;
Forest entomology;
Forensic entomology;
Medical and veterinary entomology;
Statistics, computing and mathematics.

Philosophy of science;
Genetics;
Insects in food and feed;
Insect-plant interaction;
Integrated pest management (IPM);
Morphology and physiology;
Pollination;
Reproduction;
Semiochemicals and behavior;
Taxonomy and systematics.
Toxicology.

IV - RULES FOR PREPARING ABSTRACTS

01. Title: a maximum of 170 characters with spaces. It should be written in Times New Roman font, bold, centered, size 14, with only the initial of the sentence capitalized, except for scientific names, which should be written in italics;

02. Authors: abstracts will not have a limit on the number of authors. Authors' first names should be written out in full (including compound names), as should their last names. Middle names should be abbreviated, for example: Ana Clara P. Teixeira; Font Times New Roman, size 12;

03. Authors' affiliation and address: the affiliation should be given just below the authors' names, according to the template provided. Font Times New Roman, italics, size 10;

04. Body of the text: papers should be written in a single paragraph and in a maximum of 2,000 characters with spaces, containing introduction, objectives, material and methods, results and conclusions, without separating or identifying the topics. In their first citation in the text, scientific names should be followed by order and family; and genus and species names should be written in italics, followed by their author and year. Example: Anacroneuria marlieri Froehlich, 2001 (Plecoptera: Perlidae). Bibliographical references should not be used or presented. Font Times New Roman, size 12, justified;

05. Keywords: four keywords should be included that do not appear in the title of the abstract;

06. Support: cite institutions and sources of funding that helped to carry out the work.

Attention:

 a. The Scientific Committee recommends that authors strictly correct the grammar, formatting and presentation of their abstracts, as the content is the sole responsibility of the authors.

V - RULES FOR POSTER PRESENTATION

01. Type of poster: posters may be printed on paper or canvas, at the discretion of the author(s);

02. Poster display: The representative of the work will be responsible for hanging their poster at the venue at least 3 hours before the presentation time set by the Scientific Committee. Each author must remain with their poster during the exhibition time set by the Scientific Committee. At this time, the panel will evaluate the presentation of each poster, as at the end of the event there will be an award ceremony for the best presentations. Authors are obliged to remove their posters after the stipulated time. The author who will present the work must be indicated at the time of submission and be registered for the event;

04. Poster design: the author must respect the design and format of the poster provided by the Scientific Committee. In addition, the evaluators will check the layout during the evaluation of the presentation. Papers that do not comply with the layout provided by the Committee will be disqualified. Posters must be 120 cm high and 90 cm wide;

04. Place and time: the presentations will be held in the Multipurpose Space, behind the Living Center of the Federal University of Viçosa (MG), and the schedule will be published on the Symposium website.

VI - GUIDELINES FOR ORAL PRESENTATION

The author must send the presentation, in PowerPoint format, to the e-mail address simposioentomologia@ufv.br, with the subject “Oral Presentation - Author - Title of the abstract”, by 01/08/2025 and appear 15 minutes before the scheduled time at the place specified for the presentation. A computer will be available to project the file. If the author does not show up at the time specified in the schedule, they will not be able to present their work.

01. oral presentation: each presentation will last 10 minutes and 5 minutes for questions. The author must respect the allotted time;

02. Presentation design: the author must respect the design and format of the oral presentation cover provided by the Scientific Committee, this being an eliminatory criterion;

03. Awards: as with poster presentations, there will also be awards for the best oral presentations;

04. Venue and time: will be announced by the symposium committee at a later date.

VII - AWARDS FOR THE BEST ORAL AND POSTER PRESENTATIONS

The VIII International Symposium on Entomology of Viçosa will award prizes on August 27, 2025 to the authors who stand out in their oral and poster presentations.

1. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING ABSTRACTS AND POSTER AND ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Each assessor will give a score from 1 to 5 for each of the items listed below. The final score will be the average of the two evaluators' scores:

​

  • ​The representative of the work that obtains the highest average score within each criterion will be awarded the prize.

  • If there is a tie, the Evaluation Committee will make the tie-breaker based on the highest score in the “Originality and innovation” and “Knowledge and mastery of the topic of the work” criteria, respectively, items ‘a’ and “b”.

 

Therefore, the evaluation criteria for the oral presentation and poster are:

​

a) Originality and innovation;

b) Knowledge and mastery of the theme of the work;

c) Coherence and logical sequence of the content (introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion and conclusions);

d) Relevance of the conclusions;

e) Visual quality: correct use of the layout provided by the Symposium, formatting of the text, quality of the figures, graphs, tables, etc.

f) Capacity for expression: objectivity and clarity in the presentation;

g) Motivation and involvement of the presenter;

h) Punctuality and respect for time limits.

2. AWARDS

The awards will be announced by the Organizing Committee through the Symposium's media platforms.
